The Plot and Premise
Yellowstone
is a contemporary Western drama that follows the story of the Dutton family, led by the patriarch, John Dutton III (played by Kevin Costner). The Duttons own and operate the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, located in Montana.
The central conflict of the series revolves around the constant pressure and violent struggles over the ranch's land. The Duttons are continually fighting against powerful forces that share borders with their property:
Land developers looking to build resorts and housing.
The Broken Rock Indian Reservation, led by Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), who seeks to reclaim what he considers ancestral land.
The boundaries of Yellowstone National Park.
Beyond the land disputes, the show is an intense family drama, exploring the complicated relationships, betrayals, and political maneuvering within the Dutton family as they fight to preserve their legacy and way of life.

Creator and Background

The show's success has led to multiple prequel series that explore the history of the Dutton family:
1883: Follows James and Margaret Dutton as they embark on a treacherous journey west through the Great Plains to establish the land that becomes the Yellowstone Ranch.
1923: Stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, focusing on Jacob and Cara Dutton as they navigate the challenges of the early 20th century, including drought, the Great Depression, and the flu pandemic.
